Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Alpharetta Owner’s Guide
HeatShield crown repair in Alpharetta typically runs $650 to $1,200 installed, depending on how much of the crown has failed and whether flashing needs to be reset. We stock HeatShield’s Cerfractory sealant and CrownCoat system on our trucks, so most crown repairs are done in a single visit of about two to three hours. How most Alpharetta homeowners find out their crown is failing is simple: they see water stains on the ceiling near the chimney, or they spot crumbling mortar and cracked concrete at the top of the chimney during a gutter cleaning.
We’re an independent chimney service company, not a HeatShield dealer or affiliate. We work with HeatShield products because they hold up in Georgia’s freeze-thaw cycles better than most standard crown materials, plain and simple.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield makes two crown products we install regularly in Alpharetta: the Cerfractory Flue Sealant, a water-based refractory material used to repair crown cracks and gaps up to about a quarter inch wide, and the CrownCoat System, a full crown resurfacing application for crowns with a network of hairline cracks or surface deterioration. Both are designed for masonry chimneys with a concrete crown, not for metal chase tops.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters: HeatShield Cerfractory is not a structural patch. If your crown has a crack wider than a quarter inch or a chunk that’s spalled off the edge, the crown needs more than sealant, it needs a full CrownCoat resurface or a new concrete pour. A homeowner looking at a bottle of sealant on a shelf isn’t going to know that. We do, because we’ve been called out to Alpharetta homes after someone smeared sealant over a crown that was already beyond saving, and the leak came right back the following spring.
For OEM versus aftermarket, there’s no meaningful aftermarket equivalent for HeatShield Cerfractory. It’s a specific material with a specific cure profile that we haven’t found matched by generic crown sealers. We stock HeatShield brand product because the alternative is a $20 hardware store bucket that we’d be back to replace in 18 months.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This is the classic first symptom. Water is getting past the crown and running down inside the chimney chase before it shows up on drywall. By the time you see the stain, the crown leak has usually been active for weeks or months.
- Hairline cracks spider-webbing across the crown surface. Georgia’s freeze-thaw cycle does this. Water works into tiny cracks, freezes, expands, and widens the crack a little more each winter. After enough Alpharetta winters, hairline cracks turn into full-depth fissures.
- Spalled concrete or chipped edges on the crown. This isn’t cosmetic. Once the crown edge starts shedding pieces, the overhang that directs water away from the brick is gone, and water runs straight down the chimney face every time it rains.
- White mineral streaks (efflorescence) below the crown. Water passing through the crown dissolves salts in the masonry, and when the water evaporates, it leaves white mineral deposits behind. Efflorescence on the brick below the crown line tells you water is moving through the crown itself.
- Damp firebox or musty smell in the chimney after rain. A failing crown lets water drip all the way down the flue. If the firebox smells like a wet basement after a Georgia downpour, crown failure is one of the first things we check.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Alpharetta homes, here’s what we quote on day one, in writing, before any work starts:
- Crown crack sealing (Cerfractory, isolated cracks under 1/4 inch): $225 to $375
- Full CrownCoat resurfacing: $650 to $950
- Crown replacement with new concrete pour (failed beyond resurfacing): $900 to $1,200
What drives the range: chimney height and roof pitch (safety setup takes longer on a steep pitch), how much prep work the existing crown needs, and whether flashing around the chimney base has to be removed and reset. Every quote includes materials, labor, cleanup, and a camera photo report of the crown before and after so you can see exactly what was repaired. Every HeatShield crown repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the covered repair fails within a year, we return and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
The honest split is this: you can, and should, do a ground-level visual check once a year. If you can see a defined crack from the ground with binoculars, it’s worth a closer look. What you should not do is get on the roof with a bucket of sealant and hope for the best. Crown work requires working at chimney height, usually on a pitched roof, with the kind of fall that a homeowner shouldn’t be taking for a home improvement project. And as we said above, the wrong product on a crown that’s already too far gone gives you a false sense of a fix while the leak keeps eating the chimney from inside.
If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call us at (762) 600-1468. We’ll inspect the crown, show you photos of what we found, and give you a written price. If it doesn’t need work yet, we’ll tell you that too.
FAQs
A properly applied Cerfractory crack seal or CrownCoat resurface on an otherwise sound crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years in Alpharetta’s climate. The freeze-thaw cycles here are the main wear factor, and a crown with good drainage and an intact overhang will outlast one that was already compromised before the repair. Call (762) 600-1468 if you want a specific assessment of your crown’s condition.
Yes, if the cracks are hairline to about a quarter inch wide and the crown has not spalled or lost its overhang, HeatShield Cerfractory or CrownCoat can repair it without a full replacement. If the crown is structurally loose, crumbling, or missing sections, replacement is the only fix that will hold. We’ll show you which category your crown falls into with a camera inspection, and we won’t recommend a full replacement if a repair will do the job.
Most HeatShield crown repairs in Alpharetta take two to three hours from setup to cleanup, and we complete them in a single visit. Full crown replacements with a new concrete pour take longer because the concrete needs cure time before the final CrownCoat layer goes on, usually requiring one return visit.
Yes. Our trucks carry HeatShield Cerfractory sealant and the CrownCoat system, along with DuraFlex and Gelco product lines for related chimney work. We don’t have to special-order material for most standard crown repairs, which is why we can quote and complete the work without a long lead time. Call (762) 600-1468 for a free estimate, and you’ll have a written price before any work begins.
